Monday means BandsOnBands, and we’re excited to be posting the second of two PropertyOfZack features today with Tyler Welsh of Driver Friendly. The band released Peaks + Valleys last week, so make sure to download it here and check them out on Warped Tour.
In this week’s feature, Tyler discusses his love for Gatsbys American Dream. Tyler talks about the first time he heard Gatsbys, the immediate impact the band had on him, and how their musicianship taught Tyler how to truly create music. Listen to songs by Gatsbys here and check out what Tyler had to say about one of his biggest influences below!
From Tyler Welsh of Driver Friendly:
I remember the first time I heard Gatsbys American Dream (GAD). I was driving in my friend Matt Hines’ car and he said, “Dude you have to hear this song.” He cranks the speakers and “Meet Me at the Tavern in Bowerstone” proceeds to play. It’s amazing, unlike anything I’ve ever heard. And then it was over. The song was 28 seconds long. And that was the moment I fell in love with Gatsbys.
He then starts Volcano from the first track and my jaw just dropped. There were literally no rules. There was no genre. There were no choruses, no parts repeated. Every single song was completely different, but they all connected in intricate ways. And my god, the songs were so damn catchy.
GAD was the first band that showed me how to make an album. They took a concept like the volcano and used it throughout 13 songs, but it wasn’t literal, it wasn’t obvious. It was smart, original, and when you stepped away from the record the volcano lingered with you, and you were left with an experience. It was a connection with music that I had never felt before.
